All psychological suffering is the consequence |
"Oaks bear acorns, but acorns are pregnant with Oaks" James Hillman
Your acorn is another word for your soul. Yet the word soul, in this context, is not referring to a religious concept or a “thing” but a perspective; a way of understanding yourself and your particular life circumstances. It’s what makes you a unique being filled with your own special purpose and calling. You can use acorn interchangeable with other words from many traditions and philosophies. As such, it’s akin to destiny, calling, higher self, authentic self, dharma, bliss, essence and so on. But at the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter what you call it. It’s simply important that you know it, both intellectually and viscerally.
An acorn is a small tough seed that when planted in favorable conditions and tended with the right nutrients, has all it needs to grow into a mighty oak. It is, at its core, complete potential with an established destiny. No matter how hard it tries or how outside factors demand it to change, it will never become anything other but an oak tree! Even if that acorn ends up planted in a forest of willows it can only grow into an oak. People are the same way and the sooner we embrace this fact, the healthier and more realized we become.
I encourage you to follow your acorn because according to acorn theory or depth psychology, the tradition I have been trained in, all psychological suffering is the consequence of living a life that is out of alignment with one's soul. The more our exterior lives fail to line up with the calling of our soul, the greater we suffer. And these symptoms are, in a way, our messengers, desperately crying out “don't go that way” or "go this way.”
With my work with clients, I honor these symptoms and compassionately listen to what they are trying to say. And then we work toward determining who you authentically are and how you need to show up in the world so that you can begin building a life that reflects your unique truth. In doing so, we are able to reduce psychological suffering, fashion a more satisfying existence and build stronger bonds so, at last, you can begin living your dreams!
The acorn theory is the brainchild of James Hillman, father of archetypal psychology and student of Carl Jung. Below I have listed several quotes from his New York Times #1 best selling book, “The Soul’s Code: In Search of Character and Calling” which lays out the acorn theory in its entirety. If you feel inspired to read it or would like to learn more about how this philosophy informs the work I do, contact me to set up a consultation appointment, at a reduced fee, to determine if you could benefit from this life-affirming, life-altering realignment of your soul.
